Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO: lidar, object detection system, dry and wet cleaning

Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PROEcovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO

The Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO is the second robot vacuum cleaner from the Ecovacs brand that I've had the pleasure of testing. I previously tested the 2021 flagship. Deebot T9 AIVI Plus, which at the time of writing tops the ratings of tested robot vacuum cleaners. The N8 PRO model is a simplified version, equipped not only with the basic functionality, including dry and wet cleaning, but also with advanced features. For example, the TrueDetect 3D system, which allows the robot to detect obstacles on the floor and accurately navigate around them during cleaning, and an optional self-cleaning station, which is included with the Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO Plus version. Accordingly, the price of the robot with a standard charging base is between $330 and $400, while the full self-cleaning kit will cost around $600. Below, I will thoroughly review and test the Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO, including testing its navigation system, and then express my opinion on whether this robot vacuum is worth buying. So, let's get started!

Equipment

The robot vacuum cleaner arrived in a branded box like this:

Appearance

Let's take a look at the Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO. I received a white robot for review. You can also choose black when ordering. The robot vacuum cleaner is round in shape. The body height is standard for lidar models, at about 9.5 cm.

On the front bumper, we see a sensor system that allows the robot vacuum cleaner to detect objects on the floor and avoid them while cleaning. The technology is called TrueDetect 3D. A similar solution is implemented in Dreame Bot L10 Pro, which I also had for review.

The lidar is equipped with a spring-loaded cover that prevents the robot vacuum from getting stuck under furniture. A single control button (start/pause) is located nearby. The dust container is located under the top cover. Also located here are the robot's on/off button, a Wi-Fi reset button, a QR code for connecting to the network, and a maintenance tool.

The container holds up to 420 ml of dry waste. The entire filtration system is washable with water. The filtration system itself is triple-layered: mesh, foam, and HEPA filters.

The robot's underside is equipped with six fall protection sensors. It has two side brushes, each with a three-pronged design and quick-release. The central brush has bristles and petals. One side can be removed to remove tangled hair and fur. The brush assembly is floating, allowing for better contact with flooring.

The attachment with the cloth is attached to the bottom with two clips. The cloth itself is quite thick. The disposable cloths are also well-made and, in my opinion, can be used multiple times without compromising cleaning performance. The fabric is quite thick.

Oh, and here's another important point: behind the module with the central brush, we see two plugs. You'll need to remove them if you decide to purchase the self-cleaning station. The robot will empty the dust bin through these openings. Apparently, the base unit should also come with a special dust bin with dust removal shutters.

Overall, the Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO has excellent build quality. I have no complaints about the robot.

Technical specifications

The main characteristics of the Deebot N8 PRO, as stated by the manufacturer:

Battery Li-Ion 3200 mAh
Suction power Up to 2600 Pa
Cleaning area ≥100 sq.m
Battery life Up to 110 min
Dust collector 420 ml
Water tank 240 ml
Obstacle clearance up to 20 mm
Dimensions 350*93 mm

The only important thing to note here is that this model's battery is rather weak. Most premium robot vacuums currently have 5200 mAh batteries. However, the suction power is increased, which I'll definitely check out during my tests.

Functions

Let's move on to a review of the Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO's features. I received the Chinese version of this robot vacuum for review. Therefore, connecting it requires an account registered to a Chinese phone number. However, the seller was considerate and included a sheet with a quick setup guide and login information for your personal account. Therefore, connecting it was hassle-free, absolutely no problem.

Control via app

In my case, the app interface is in English. Although some reviewers demonstrate the app's functionality in Russian. Perhaps I simply couldn't find the language setting. Or perhaps there's a difference between the iOS and Android apps. In my case, the robot connected to an Android phone.

On the main control panel, the robot vacuum cleaner creates a room map and automatically divides the area into rooms. Three main operating modes are displayed below the map. In Area mode, you can select specific rooms to clean. In Automatic mode, the robot vacuum cleaner cleans the entire available area. Custom mode allows you to set cleaning zones on the map. You can also customize the cleaning sequence for each room.

You can also customize the number of passes the robot makes (1 or 2), adjust the suction power, and the wetness of the cleaning cloth. The robot's functionality even allows you to customize cleaning modes for each room. That's a plus.

Flexible cleaning settingsFlexible cleaning settings

Flexible cleaning settings

Above the map is a section with cleaning history, which is also duplicated in the settings section. In the settings section, you can:

  • Turn the self-cleaning function on or off if a special station is provided.
  • Set up a cleaning schedule by choosing the time, days of the week, desired rooms, and even custom cleaning parameters.
  • Toggle the object detection system on and off, which might be useful.
  • Activate the function to continue cleaning after recharging at the base.
  • Set the time when the robot vacuum cleaner should not disturb you.
  • Turn on a reminder to rinse the wipe after a certain period of wet cleaning.
  • Reset the map you've created. Incidentally, the Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO can store multiple unique cleaning maps, which is a plus.

In the additional settings, you can view the cleaning log, track the status of consumables, and adjust the volume and select the language for voice notifications. This robot vacuum cleaner can speak English and Chinese.

Basic settingsBasic settings

Basic settings

That's all the functionality of the Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO. It's also important to note that the robot can automatically increase suction power when entering carpets, supports no-go zones and virtual walls (even separate no-go zones for wet cleaning mode), continues cleaning after recharging at the base, and allows you to edit room boundaries. Unfortunately, the Chinese version does not support voice assistant control.

Testing

A detailed video review with all the tests has already been prepared and published on the channel. I recommend watching the video:

Navigation

Let's move on to the tests. First, we'll check the Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO's navigation in a room with obstacles. Thanks to its object detection system, the robot navigates neatly around obstacles without getting stuck or disturbing them too much. The feet of the dryer presented no problem, and it was able to clean neatly around the legs of a chair and a box. The only criticism is that in dual-pass mode, the Deebot OZMO N8 PRO cleans in a single, serpentine pattern rather than in a crisscross pattern. This isn't very efficient.

Navigating an Obstacle Room

Regarding navigation within the home, the robot vacuum encountered the main problem with most object detection systems. The sensors detect carpet as an obstacle, so the robot avoids it. It does occasionally manage to climb onto the carpet, but this is rare, and therefore, with the 3D sensor enabled, the robot is unable to clean carpets. This is crucial to consider. However, if the TrueDetect 3D system is disabled, the robot vacuum behaves like a standard lidar robot. In this case, it navigates well and has no problem climbing onto carpets.

Definition of objects

Let's test how the obstacle detection and avoidance system works. I laid out the most common household cleaning obstacles on the floor. Specifically, a smartphone charger, a sneaker, a simulated pet pee device, a small object like a toy, a slipper, a bathroom scale, and a sock.

Identifying objects on the floor

To my surprise, the Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO was able to detect all objects on the floor and carefully navigate around them while cleaning. Its sensor system is even better than the Deebot T9 AIVI, which features an active camera and artificial intelligence. This is a big plus for the simplified version!

Suction power

The suction power was also impressive. The robot vacuum cleaner was able to suck up debris from crevices up to 8 mm deep. It struggled with 10 mm, but even this suction power is still an excellent result. The Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO certainly qualifies as a powerful robot vacuum cleaner!

Dry cleaning of laminate flooring

The collection performance of various types of debris on laminate floors is quite high. Like most other round robots, this one failed to sweep up a small amount of debris in the corners. Otherwise, the stand is clean. The debris is collected in the dust bin. The central brush picked up some hair, but the side brushes are clean. Test passed!

Cleaning the carpet

Carpet cleaning performance is also excellent. The Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO was able to pick up all the debris, thoroughly vacuuming the carpet.

Wet cleaning

Regarding the quality of its cleaning, there are some concerns about this model. Not only did it leave a fairly wide area along the baseboard uncleaned, but the robot also failed to remove some of the dirt on the floor, leaving streaks.

Removing dirt

However, this robot vacuum cleaner is suitable for household use, specifically dust collection and gentle damp cleaning. It's also great that it can vacuum and mop simultaneously.

Wet cleaning of carpets

If your home has carpets, there are three options for solving the problem of simultaneous dry and wet cleaning. First, enable the object detection system, which will allow the robot to carefully clean only hard surfaces, avoiding carpets.

Second, set no-go zones on carpets in wet cleaning mode. Third, if you disable the bumper sensor system, the Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO will still enter carpets in wet cleaning mode, but at least the water supply to the cleaning pad will be cut off during this time.

Obstacle clearance

This robot vacuum cleaner easily navigates thresholds up to 2 cm high. That's a plus.

Driving on dark surfaces

Unfortunately, a black rug is detected by the sensors as a height difference, so the Deebot OZMO N8 PRO avoids black areas of the floor. This is important to keep in mind.

Noise level

Let's check how loud the device is. With the suction disabled, the noise level is between 58-60 dB. In Standard mode, the noise level reaches 63 dB, in Max mode the value was between 66.5-68 dB, and when selecting Max+ mode, the peak was 69.1 dB.

Noise level

The noise level is slightly higher than standard, but it's important to consider the high suction power. Therefore, it's safe to say the robot isn't overly loud and is quieter than less powerful counterparts.

Let's sum it up

Ecovacs Deebot OZMO N8 PRO has been thoroughly reviewed and tested. our evaluation system he managed to gain 73 out of 100 points And that's a good result. The same as a direct competitor. Roborock S5 Max. However, Ecovax has an optional database, and in the PRO+ version it can score 78 points, putting it on par with such popular robots as Dreame Bot Z10 Pro, Viomi Alpha UV (S9) And Roidmi Eve Plus.

Overall rating of robot vacuum cleaners tested on robovac.washerhouse.com:https://robovac.washerhouse.com/en/rejtingi/robovac-obshhij-rejting-robotov-pylesosov-robo.html.

I'll share my impressions of the robot. I liked the following:

  1. Good navigation.
  2. High quality assembly.
  3. Very accurate system for detecting objects on hard surfaces.
  4. Simultaneous dry and wet cleaning.
  5. High suction power.
  6. High quality dry cleaning.
  7. A large number of functions for flexible adjustment of cleaning parameters.
  8. Good obstacle clearance.
  9. A self-cleaning station is optionally available.

As for the disadvantages, there are also quite a few of them:

  1. The object detection system does not work correctly on carpets.
  2. Poor quality of dirt removal.
  3. To connect, you need an account registered in China.
  4. Fear of dark floor coverings.
  5. The battery is weak for such power.

Overall, the robot vacuum cleaner left mostly positive reviews. Of course, it will be most autonomous and effective only on hard floors. This model is far from the best if you have carpets in your home. Therefore, if you're looking for a reliable robot for dry and wet cleaning on laminate, tile, and other smooth surfaces, and you're interested in the object recognition system, I recommend considering this option. In my opinion, it makes sense to purchase one at a price closer to $300. For this price, the functionality and cleaning quality are worth it.

At $400, it's far from the best option. Compared to its direct competitor, the Dreame Bot L10 Pro, the Ecowax offers a better object detection system, while the Dreame Bot L10 Pro offers similar suction power. The Dreame Bot L10 Pro is more affordable, has a more streamlined mobile app, and offers superior wet cleaning performance. So, it's up to you to decide what's most important.

On that note, I'd like to end this review. If you have any questions, please ask them in the comments. Happy shopping. Bye!
