The launch price is in the $1,300-$1,400 range, which is on par with premium competitors. For this price, the robot is equipped with the most advanced features and design features available in 2024. These include a retractable side brush for sweeping debris out of corners, a retractable cleaning cloth, increased suction power of 12,000 Pa, a more compact station with automatic bottom cleaning scrapers, and updated artificial intelligence. Overall, there are some improvements compared to the previous flagship, the L30 Ultra, and now it's important to test them. Below, I'll thoroughly test the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete, highlight its pros and cons, and then express my opinion on whether this robot vacuum cleaner is worth buying. So, let's get started!

Equipment

The robot vacuum cleaner arrived in a branded box like this:

The package is extremely comprehensive, as the "Complete" designation immediately indicates. This includes the robot itself, its station, power adapter, two cleaning cloth holders, instructions, a brush, and a spare cleaning bag. There's also an optional kit, which includes a liter bottle of detergent, 12 cleaning cloths, two side brushes, a silicone turbo brush, three HEPA filters, and three cleaning bags for the station.

This is exactly what you should get when you buy a robot vacuum cleaner for more than $1000!

Appearance

Now let me explain how the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete works. It's only available in white and gold. First, let's look at the robot itself. Its body is round and stands 97 mm above the floor.

A wall sensor is installed on the right side of the bumper, and a system of sensors and cameras is located in the center to recognize and accurately avoid objects on the floor.

The camera allows you to remotely monitor your home. It also features a backlight to help the robot vacuum recognize objects better in complete darkness.

The lidar is the main navigation unit. The lidar cover is spring-loaded. Three mechanical control buttons are located nearby.

The dust container is located under the top cover. It holds 300 ml. The filtration system is HEPA-only. The robot does have a water tank, but it's hidden inside the body. It holds 80 ml. Water is automatically pumped into the tank via the station.

The robot has four fall protection sensors installed on its bottom. There's also a carpet sensor.

There's a single side brush. It's a three-pronged brush secured with a screw. This brush is the X40 Ultra's major upgrade over the L30 Ultra. It extends to sweep debris into corners and along narrow spaces, such as under doors and furniture. A very interesting solution.

The central brush unit is floating. We see a standard silicone brush installed. And that's a real letdown. I know the Chinese version of the Dreame X40 Pro, which I've already reviewed, comes with a bladed brush out of the box. It's not included here yet, and it's supposed to be available soon, but why it was removed "from the original package" is, apparently, a question for the "effective managers." You're skimping on the wrong thing, folks! The silicone turbo brush is standard, and can be removed from both ends for cleaning hair and fur.

Two cleaning cloth holders are located behind the turbo brush. This is a familiar design for Dreame robotic vacuum cleaners. Behind the left cleaning cloth, we see a mechanism that extends the cleaning cloth to the edge of the body, allowing it to clean floors right up to baseboards and furniture. This technology is called MopExtend.

There's even an algorithm for the robot's rear end to scroll if it detects a small gap between the floor and an object—for example, under a door or furniture. A very cool solution!

I'll add that the cloth not only presses against the baseboard when cleaning, but also rolls into the corner, which improves the quality of cleaning in the corners.

The wipers also automatically lift when entering carpets, during dry cleaning, and when returning to the station. The wiper lift height has been increased to 10.5 mm. Incidentally, the brushes also lift to the same height.

I'd like to point out right away that the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete can automatically lift the cleaning cloths, turbo brush, and side brush, depending on the mode. While this is very cool, there are some nuances that I'll cover during testing.

As for the station, the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete self-cleans, washes the wipes with hot water and dries them with warm air.

Automatic mixing of detergent is also provided, and if necessary, the station can be connected to the sewer and water supply by purchasing the appropriate module.

The station's main upgrade is the installation of special scrapers in the napkin washing area, which self-cleanse the station's bottom of dirt and debris.

Otherwise, everything here is as it always was, very practical. The station has spacious tanks and an overall pleasant design.

Speaking of features, the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete is controlled via the proprietary Dreamehome app. Connecting to the network is seamless, with no regional locks or workarounds. The app is in Russian, and the robot itself also speaks Russian. Everything is convenient and intuitive.

A wide range of options for flexible cleaning settings has been implemented. I'd like to point out right away that the water temperature for cleaning the wipes has been increased. This should improve the station's efficiency.

In addition to the side brush extending into corners, a technology has been implemented that raises the side brush when returning to the station, washing the floor, and also when driving onto carpets.

We also implemented a new laboratory-grade stain detection feature. The robot is designed to automatically detect stains on the floor and thoroughly clean them.

Please note that at the time of this review's publication, the app does not support the company's "Ok, Dreame" voice assistant. However, brand representatives indicate that this feature will be added soon.

And finally, let's move on to the tests! First, we'll test the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete's navigation in a room with obstacles. The robot vacuum first moves around the perimeter of the room, then cleans the entire available area in a serpentine pattern. It detected and avoided the legs of the dryer. It also swept around the box and chair legs separately, then returned to the station. The test was successful.

Speaking of navigation within the house, the robot vacuum cleans room by room, following the perimeter, then in a serpentine pattern. After each room, as I've determined, it returns to the station and washes the wipes, then resumes cleaning from where it left off. There are no uncleaned areas left; this model has excellent navigation!

Object recognition

Speaking of the floor object recognition system, it's very accurate in good lighting. The robot vacuum successfully recognized 6 out of 6 objects, displaying them with corresponding icons on the map. Excellent results! It even recognized a toy as a pet due to its shape.

The robot vacuum cleaner also performed well in recognizing objects in complete darkness, recognizing and avoiding 6 out of 6 objects.

Suction power

In terms of suction power, in Quiet mode, the robot can vacuum debris from a 2 mm gap and partially from a 4 mm gap. In Standard mode, the robot vacuums more reliably from a 4 mm gap. Turbo and Maximum modes offer similar suction power, allowing the robot to vacuum from 6 mm and even 10 mm gaps. Maximum+ is the most powerful mode, allowing the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete to vacuum more thoroughly from all gaps, including 8 mm. Overall, this robot offers very high suction power, and it can vacuum from a 10 mm gap.

Dry cleaning

The quality of debris collection on laminate floors is excellent, regardless of the structure. The robot vacuum completely cleaned the entire floor, including the corners. The center and side brushes are clean, and all debris is in the dust bin. Test passed successfully!

Carpet cleaning

There's a BIG issue with cleaning carpets. When the robot vacuum detects carpet, it picks up not only the cleaning cloths but also the side brush. This is a very unfortunate design decision. You can see that the robot vacuum cleaned most of the debris. But a small amount remained around the perimeter of the stand, at the top, because neither the side brush nor the center brush could reach it.

Important: With the firmware update, the option to disable the side brush lift function has become available in the settings..

It did a good job of cleaning medium pile carpets.

Self-cleaning

Immediately after the "dirty tests," I checked how well the robot vacuum cleaner self-cleans. Before returning to the station, the dust bin was completely full of dirt. After the self-cleaning test, the dust bin was completely empty, so this robot's self-cleaning is excellent! The results are excellent.

Wet cleaning

The cleaning performance is also excellent. The cloth adheres well to the floor and absorbs dirt.

When it came to scrubbing tough stains, the robot even managed to remove dried-on coffee and sauce stains. Granted, it didn't do so on the first try. It took eight tries, to be precise. But it was still up to the task. Many similar and predecessor robots in the line couldn't even achieve this level of performance.

Wet cleaning and carpets

When it comes to wet cleaning on carpeted floors, there are several robot behavior options. I'll highlight three of the most interesting. The first is the automatic lifting of the cleaning cloths when entering carpets, allowing the robot vacuum cleaner to simultaneously vacuum and mop the floor, leaving the carpets dry and clean.

The second option is to enable the automatic carpet avoidance feature in wet cleaning mode. And the third mode is unique. The robot vacuum first performs dry and wet cleaning of hard floors, then returns to the base, automatically detaches the cleaning pads, and returns to the cleaning process, having vacuumed the carpets without the pads. This is especially useful for high- and medium-pile carpets, as it completely eliminates any contact between the pad and the carpet if necessary.

The idea is very cool. Not only does it completely eliminate contact between wet wipes and carpets, but it's also a more reliable solution than simply lifting the wipes on carpets. A so-called lift can wear out faster if used frequently.

Washing quality of napkins

I'd immediately like to test the effectiveness of the station itself. Let's start with the cleaning performance of the wipes. After cleaning the floor of dirt and stains, the wipes were in a terrible state. And after washing the wipes, I can say they are actually much cleaner. Increasing the heating temperature to 70 degrees Celsius and automatically mixing in the detergent produced results.

In a domestic setting, after washing the floor, the wipes are rinsed even better at the station. They don't get washed away by the pressure of warm water. This is a plus.

Station maintenance

The station itself is very easy to clean. We remove the drain and tray and rinse them in the sink. The bottom of the station can be wiped with a damp cloth if necessary. Overall, the scrapers do a good job of cleaning the bottom.

Obstacle clearance

The robot has excellent maneuverability. It can easily cross a 2 cm threshold!

Driving on black surfaces

Driving over black carpets is no problem. The robot glides over the black carpet as if nothing had happened.

Noise level

As for the noise level, it ranges from 54 to 72.5 dB, depending on the selected operating mode. The noise level is average, which is quite normal given the high actual power.

I also noticed that the self-cleaning station is very quiet. I checked this. The Dreame X40 Ultra Complete's self-cleaning station noise level is about 67 dB. Meanwhile, its self-cleaning counterpart, the Dreame D10 Plus Gen 2, has a noise level of about 75 dB.

Personal opinion

The Dreame X40 Ultra Complete robot vacuum cleaner has been thoroughly reviewed and tested. our evaluation system he managed to gain 238 points and expected to lead Overall rating of tested robotic vacuum cleaners as of August 2024. And this even takes into account all the comments I'll discuss now.

So, I liked the following:

The station is very effective in its tasks, including self-cleaning the dust bin, washing, drying, and self-cleaning the bottom of the station with its scrapers. It also features the ability to connect to sewer and water lines.
2. A retractable side brush finally solves the problem of sweeping debris out of corners. Unlike D-shaped robots, the round Dreame Bot X40 Ultra maintains its maneuverability. It quickly and gently navigates corners and around chair legs, without any unnecessary touching or movement.
3. Maximum wet cleaning efficiency. This is due to the retractable cleaning cloth, which allows the robot to thoroughly clean areas along baseboards and furniture. Moreover, thanks to updated algorithms, the cloth is better at cleaning corners and narrow spaces under furniture. Incidentally, the robot's dirt removal is better than previous models in the line. This may also be due to the cloths being hotter after washing.

4. Very high suction power, both in figures and in real tests.
5. High-quality dry and wet cleaning on any surface.
6. If desired, you can purchase and install a turbo brush, which self-cleans with built-in blades and prevents hair and fur from becoming tangled. There's no need to clean it manually.
7. The richest complete set with all necessary consumables.
8. The presence of a floor recognition system allows the robot to clean more accurately and is less likely to chew on a cord, sock, or other household item.
9. Automatic removal of napkin holders at the station for complete dry cleaning.
10. Automatic lifting of cloths, turbo brush and side brush.
11. The app offers a wide range of features. You can customize cleaning parameters to suit your needs. There's also a CleanGenius smart cleaning mode. New threshold-passing capabilities.

Now what I didn't like:

1. The standard package doesn't include the awesome turbo brush with blades. You have to buy it separately, and I really disliked that.
2. At the time of writing, the app does not include the proprietary Ok Dreame voice assistant.

So, what can I say? The Dreame X40 Ultra Complete is another big step towards the perfect robot vacuum. It's practically perfect already. taking into account software updates and the addition of new featuresOverall, the update has significantly improved performance: the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete now rotates its rear end in tight spaces and extends a side brush, and the station's bottom now has self-cleaning scrapers. But if you sacrifice these new features, there are equally powerful models in the lineup, such as the DreameBot L10s Pro Ultra Heat, which costs $400 less.

The large number of alternative models in the lineup makes it difficult to choose: the best option or the most optimal one. And the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete is, objectively, the best robot vacuum cleaner in the brand's global lineup in 2024! Tests prove it.
