Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute: The KING of cordless vacuums in 2024!

Hello to all readers of this project! In this review, I'll be looking at Dyson's top-of-the-line upright vacuum, the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute. This 2023 model, but even in 2024, it's the most powerful in the lineup, and in my opinion, the best for dry cleaning only. The vacuum, complete with six main attachments, cost me $680. I won't reveal all the features of this flagship right away, to make it more interesting. Next, I'll test the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute, highlight its pros and cons based on my test results, and then express my personal opinion. So, let's get started!
Equipment
The standard delivery package includes:
- Main block.
- Extension tube with built-in crevice tool.
- Basic floor nozzle with carpet roller.
- Basic floor nozzle with fluffy roller for hard floors.
- Nozzle for cleaning upholstered furniture and mattresses.
- Attachment with sliding bristles.
- Charger.
- Wall holder for vacuum cleaner and accessories.
- Documentation for the vacuum cleaner including translation into Russian.
There's also an extended kit with extra attachments and adapters. I didn't pay a few thousand extra for it, but keep in mind that the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute is also sold in a kit with ten attachments.
Appearance
Now let's take a look at the device's design. First and foremost, I'd like to highlight the cool design and color combination. Frankly, this is the first Dyson vacuum I've held in my hands, despite having tested over 50 similar upright vacuums. And it certainly delivers a "wow" factor. The build quality is high, but I personally really dislike those signature paint drips. In my opinion, they really cheapen the look.
Let's start with the main unit. It houses a powerful motor, generating up to 280 AirWatts of suction. By comparison, the Dyson V15 only produces 240 AirWatts.
The battery is removable, which is a plus. It has a charging port. You can connect it manually or by attaching the charger plug to a wall mount. The second option is to use a wireless charger on the mount. Very convenient.
An information display and control buttons are located on the end of the vacuum. Pressing the button turns the vacuum cleaner on and off; there's no need to hold it down. The second button switches between operating modes. There are actually four: Eco, Medium, Automatic, and Turbo. It's worth noting that the built-in automatic power boost mode, which detects dirt and carpets, appears instead of the Medium mode when the floor nozzles are attached. Spot cleaning nozzles use the Medium mode, not the Automatic mode. This Automatic mode works fine with either the first or second floor nozzle. Conveniently, the estimated battery life is displayed for each mode.
It's also convenient that the menu is in Russian. The settings offer a wide range of languages. And, you've probably noticed some statistics on the display. The Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute can automatically count the size and quantity of debris.
A filtration system consisting of a fabric filter and a HEPA filter is located around the end of the display. Both filters are washable, as indicated by the label.
And here's what the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute's first cool feature looks like: dust bin emptying technology. There's a special slider at the bottom; when pulled, the bin slides down the cyclone, clearing all the debris from it, and the bottom opens.
If necessary, the dust collector flask can be completely removed for cleaning.
Unfortunately, the cyclone itself and its mesh are not removable. I find this inconvenient. I'm used to rinsing this unit after use, which is the case with most similar devices.
Let's move on to a review of the included attachments. The most advanced is the main one, with a roller for hard floors. It features a swivel joint. The roller extends out to the front edge. The signature side light illuminates the cleaning area.
Dyson came up with this idea, and other brands have since adopted it. The backlighting is truly cool and effective. Frankly, I even enjoy using this vacuum cleaner with the lights off now. It's an inexplicable pleasure. Anyone who's used it will understand.
The roller can be removed from the side without any tools. It's a very cool design. The side lock can be removed if needed to remove tangled hair and fur from the edges.
The carpet roller attachment also features a swivel joint. A switch for the lower curtain is located at the front, which is recommended for picking up large debris. Removing the roller requires a coin or a flat-head screwdriver. The shaft is fitted with short, elastic pile inserts, which have proven effective for brushing out carpets. Behind the roller, there's a comb for detangling tangled hair and fur. Another smart move from the brand.
The upholstery and mattress cleaning attachment also deserves special attention. It has a cone-shaped turbo brush, presumably for removing tangled hair and fur. It's made of plastic with a bristle insert.
The attachment with sliding bristles is of a fairly standard design, nothing special here.
And here's another unique feature of the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute. The crevice tool is hidden inside the extension wand. Press the red button, and the tool pops out. More precisely, with the wand still attached, pressing the red button detaches the extension wand, leaving the crevice tool inside. A very convenient solution. This way, the crevice tool is always at hand. You're vacuuming the floor and suddenly need to pick up something. Detach it, vacuum the object, and get back to the main task. Great!
The wall mount deserves special attention. As mentioned earlier, it can be used to store the vacuum cleaner and attachments, as well as charge the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute.
But it's unclear why there are only two nozzle holders when the kit comes with five, not counting the built-in crevice tool. Well, let's say there's one more nozzle on the vacuum cleaner itself. What about the two remaining nozzles? What if the kit comes with 10 nozzles? Moreover, I couldn't attach the furniture nozzle to the wall holder; it simply doesn't fit. And it's the second most important nozzle when using it. At least for me.
Overall, the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute's design has both pros and cons, which will be discussed again in the final review. But so far, the overall impression is positive.
Technical specifications
The main characteristics of the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute, as stated by the manufacturer:
- Battery: 2500 mAh.
- Suction power: up to 282 AW.
- Operating time up to 70 minutes.
- Dust collector 760 ml.
- Noise level 70.5-81 dB:
- Weight: 3.065-3.447 kg.
I personally tested the noise level, and it's in the range of 70.5-81 dB. I can say that the vacuum cleaner's noise level is slightly elevated. This is due to its high power, as these parameters are interdependent.
In terms of weight, the main unit weighs 2,247 grams, the extension tube weighs 393 grams, the floor nozzle with fluffy roller weighs 425 grams, and the carpet nozzle with roller weighs 807 grams. In total, the fully assembled vacuum cleaner weighs between 3,065 and 3,447 grams. This is slightly heavier than most similar models, so it's important to keep this in mind.
Testing
A detailed video review of the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute with all the tests:
Opening hours
And finally, let's move on to the tests. First, let's check the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute's battery life in Turbo mode with the main brush attached. It managed 14 minutes and 32 seconds of runtime. That's a good result. The typical runtime for upright vacuums at maximum power is around 10-12 minutes. Interestingly, when turned on, the remaining runtime displayed was 16 minutes and 24 seconds. As I said, this is an estimate.
Suction power
As for suction power, even in Eco mode, the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute was able to easily vacuum debris from a 10mm gap. So, it's certainly a powerful upright vacuum.
Collecting debris on laminate flooring
Now let's test how well Dyson's flagship vacuums up floor debris. I scattered various types of debris on the laminate flooring: hair, fur, grains, and other small household debris. This device handled the task well. It's important to note that it has no trouble picking up debris along baseboards and in corners. It picks everything up thoroughly. The fluffy roller doesn't get tangled up.
In a home environment, after collecting hair from the floor throughout the apartment, and you see a lot of it, the roller is also completely clean. Miracles!
Carpet cleaning
The same debris was scattered on a low-pile carpet, and the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute, I'd say, sucked the life out of it. Then it thoroughly cleaned a medium-pile carpet. Again, the carpet roller was clean, nothing was caught on it.
Using additional attachments
It's also worth noting that the complete kit allows you to clean a sofa, areas the main nozzle can't reach, and even the inside of a car if necessary. That's a plus!
Cleaning the dust collector
Finally, I'll tell you how to clean the dust container. Under normal household conditions, a half-empty container, including hair, is very quick and easy to empty. But even if the dust container is completely full, hair and fur are scraped off the mesh filter around the cyclone, and all the debris falls into the bucket. With other vacuum cleaners, you usually have to completely remove the container and empty it. Dyson excels here, and its container cleaning system is clearly superior to its competitors!
Personal opinion
The tests are over. First, I'll highlight the pros and cons I discovered, and then I'll share my own opinion about the vacuum cleaner.
I liked the following:
- In reality, the suction power is very strong. I'm judging this not only by the test results and the claimed 280 Air Watts, a record-breaking wattage for the line, but also by how the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute cleaned carpets and brushed out the upholstery of a sofa. In turbo mode, it easily rivals corded vacuums, although its runtime is only about 14 and a half minutes.
- Nevertheless, even 14 and a half minutes of runtime is a good battery life for a powerful upright vacuum cleaner. It's 2-4 minutes longer than similar models. In Eco mode, which is sufficient in most cases, the vacuum cleaner can run for up to 70 minutes.
- The Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute certainly boasts high-quality dirt collection on a variety of surfaces, thanks in part to its two different floor attachments.
- Of course, Dyson's HUGE advantage is its dust bin emptying system. It's truly the most convenient of all the vacuum cleaners I've used. And remember, there were over 50 of them in the test room.
- Dyson's signature laser light is a plus. It improves cleaning efficiency and immerses you more deeply in the cleaning process. Debris is clearly illuminated from a distance.
- The extension tube hides a crevice tool that can be used in one motion. I really liked this solution.
- A high-quality filtration system. It features a proprietary multi-cyclone system consisting of 14 cyclones, a HEPA filter with a fabric filter, and a mesh filter. The HEPA filter module is even washable with water.
- Automatic suction boost mode detects dirt and carpets. A very useful feature that helps conserve battery life.
- The trash counting mode. While not a crucial feature, it may still be useful for some. Plus, it demonstrates the intelligent capabilities of a premium vacuum cleaner.
- The informative display with Russian-language menus deserves special praise. Moreover, the display is bright.
- A removable battery is a very convenient solution, making it easy to replace and allowing you to extend the vacuum cleaner's operating time by purchasing a replacement battery.
- The vacuum cleaner can be charged on a wall mount by simply sliding the main unit into the slot. This is an alternative to wireless charging, eliminating the need to manually plug the power cord into the socket each time.
- High-quality assembly and a strong brand reputation. Of course, that's a given. I've heard Dyson called the kings of the air or the masters of the winds. I generally agree.
- And, of course, the stylish design and creative color combinations make Dyson stand out from its competitors, and for many, this will be a pleasant bonus.
Now about the disadvantages, they exist too.
- The most important thing is that Dyson has left the Russian market. This means there's no official warranty on the product. There's only a local warranty from stores, but I don't know what the situation is with after-sales service and obligations. I'd love to hear from anyone familiar with the situation in the comments.
- The cyclone filter and mesh can't be removed, which I personally find inconvenient. It's impossible to clean these components. The only way to get rid of the dust that's accumulated inside is to tap it out, which is inconvenient.
- There are no holders for all the included attachments. Storing them is not convenient, and not all attachments can be mounted on the wall mount.
- It's heavier than similar products. Your hand will tire faster, especially if you use it as a handheld vacuum.
- One-handed operation is not implemented. As much as I'd like it, your thumb won't be able to reach the power button with the hand you use to hold the vacuum. You'll have to use your other hand. It's not a deal-breaker, but many brands are moving toward one-handed operation, and I support this decision.
- Increased noise levels during operation. This is due to the power, but many people take this into account when choosing an upright vacuum cleaner. It would be a good idea to work on reducing the noise level in the motor compartment.
- There's no vertical parking position outside the holder. This means if you need to take a break while using the vacuum, you'll have to bend over and place it on the floor or prop it up.
- And the last thing I didn't like was the trademark paint drips on the body. They look cheap, even though brand representatives had previously praised these streaks, which are a result of the use of high-strength plastic molding materials. It would be better to find alternative ways to make the body of the parts stronger without leaving streaks, in my opinion.
Ultimately, in my opinion, the most significant drawback is the lack of official representatives on the market. Regardless of how you look at it, the price of a vacuum cleaner starts at $600 and can exceed a hundred in some stores. But we have what we have, so we rely on the brand's high reliability in the hope that the vacuum we choose will last a long time.
Otherwise, I enjoyed using this vacuum cleaner, and it also gave me a better understanding of what a top-end upright vacuum should look and function like. It's definitely one of the best cordless vacuums of 2024. Of the ones I tested, it's only rivaled by similarly priced options. Dreame Z30How do you think these two top-end models compare? The similar model even claims to have 310 Aerowatts of power. Let us know in the comments and subscribe to the channel so you don't miss this comparison if it sparks your interest.
On that note, I'd like to end this review. If you have any questions, please ask them in the comments. Happy shopping, everyone. Bye!
